Rainbow Warrior

Robin sent me this eBay listing this morning (click on the image to visit the auction page) and ... well, I don't even have to tell you, do I? You could go out loaded for BEAR in this dress. Cell phone, iPod, paper and pencil, wallet, business cards, breath mints, five lipsticks ... and that's just the red pocket in the front!

And, yes, I realize it's a bit extreme, but sometimes you need to be extreme to make a point. Or to carry all your stuff. And is it any more extreme than this?




I could fit my SON in that bag. And he's EIGHT. (And he doesn't go anywhere without his Nintendo DS, so the bag would also play tinny Japanese videogame music.) In fact, I almost expect a bunch of clowns to start extricating themselves from that handbag. (The last one out toots a little horn, and looks suspiciously like Tom Cruise.) Also, that bag costs more than many people's houses, while the dress is at only $26 right now!

Now, I know I carry too much stuff around with me (the four issues of New Scientist is not negotiable, though maybe I could clean out some receipts and lollipops) but the alternative is being bored out of my mind when the inevitable delays occur. Maybe I should take up meditation?

This fashion blogger manages to do it all: work, family, fabulousness. And she's not afraid to put herself and her own fashion foibles out there for the masses to muse upon. 1. What is the first article of clothing you remember that you loved to wear? Easy. My "Cheerios" outfit. Smack in the middle of the stylish 70s, it was a polyester print combo. Pants and vest, in chocolate brown with little oatmeal-colored "cheerios." I'm hoping and wishing that my mom still has it - I heard from my stepdad that she's been digging out my old clothes for my now 7-month-old Bean. I'd LOVE it if she could sport my Cheerios. (Talk about reliving youth through the next generation.)

2. We all know Goodwill is amazing, but where is your other favorite place to shop for a fashion bargain in the DC area? Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights. With the combo of Filene's, TJ Maxx, Loehmann's, and the (very) occasional find at Steinmart, there are lots of choices. True, true, you have to root through the racks, which means time-starved folks can't count on finding things, but it's worth it, if you have the time. And if you can't find there, well, then you can say "screw the bargain," and hit the new Bloomie's or Nieman Marcus.

3. Where is your favorite place to shop for a fashion bargain outside of DC? Malena's, in historic West Chester, PA. I'm disguising this as a plug for a childhood friend of my lil' sis, but owner Malena has a fantastic eye for vintage, and doesn't charge an arm and a leg for it. I've scored a gorgeous big brown alligator clutch and a retro daisy choker, both of which need to be broken out soon...

4. Who is your current favorite designer? Oh dear. I have to pick one? I suppose the obvious choice is Michael Kors. He's the first designer, other than the ridiculously obvious Chanel, I recognized on screen (his at-the-time Celine line clothed Rene Russo's character in Thomas Crown Affair - and it's where DC Celine got her name). I stayed to the end of the credits to see if I was right - and I was. I still love his simple, elegant lines and attention to detail and form. The first "designer" piece I ever owned was a spring coat from his KORS by Michael Kors line...mommy bought it for me ages ago, and it still is serving well. I could wear just about anything he ever designs. A favorite for this summer? This safari shirtdress. [Also see right.] Effortless - and I love that minis are here for a while.

5. If you could own any single item from fashion past or present - money is no object! - what would it be? The dress in my head. For my junior prom, I was dying to have a flowy, 1940s-Rita Hayworth-Fay-Wray-inspired gown. I searched the vintage (at the time, we just called them consignment or thrift) stores for it, to no avail. I ended up with a Cinderella-style pink gown instead...loved it, but my dream was shattered.

But then my dream actually came true - and I didn't realize it right away. After trying on what was probably 100 dresses, in every style from Elizabeathan Reem Acra to simple Priscilla of Boston, I settled on a ivory silk cowl-necked Lynn Lugo sheath for my June 2006 wedding. At one of my fittings, I realized I was going to get married in my prom dress dream. It was apparently well chosen. I received more compliments on that dress than I could've imagined.

Now I just have to find a place to wear it again. Black tie event, anyone? [the DCGF: Wear it to the Goodwill Bridal Sale. Why? Just 'cause.]

Bonus Question: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? I have absolutely no idea. I'm waaaaaay too impatient to find out. I've tried. No dice.

Choosing slipcovers

Fixing up day at the cottage. Things got moved around and messed up when we dropped off the wicker and the kitchen set during the winter. I just got in there today to sort things out, put things back in their proper places etc. Opened the windows to air the place out and picked up all the moths balls. I think. I hope.
I have to take the wicker outside and scrub it and paint it. But I was too focused on deciding what I was going to cover the old cushion with first. I had 3 choices - a bedspread, some fabric and this 1940s barkcloth daybed set that I bought on ebay from froufrou several years ago. This was the winner. It's actually too big and half of it is folded under the cushion, but I think I can pin it to stay in place. I have regular bed pillows inside of the cushion covers on the back of the couch, I think two pillows in each will make them nice and firm.



But now I have the chair and rocker with no matching cushions. This pink pillow is too busy on the couch, isn't it? It's just that I have more of the pink fabric and I could easily make pretty cushions from it for the two chairs. I like the way the pink looks on the white wicker. But I'm not sure yet how it would look with the black sofa. The daybed, which is between the couch and rocker, is covered with a green and ivory Bates-like spread, so that's another pattern to deal with.


Check out this gal, I lover her. The table is glass top wraught iron. 1970s patio furniture. I wrapped the embroidery around cardboard and put it under the glass. The embroidery was bought on ebay many years ago. It's one of those printed Voguart types.



I took a walk up on the beach and it was beautiful. People were out in shorts. It's hard to believe that it's April.

Etsy - Crafts come in all sizes

So I am obsessed, and I mean OBSESSED, with this site I found called Etsy.com which is kind of like the craft fair of the internet. Anyone who makes anything - from paintings to scarves to pottery to jewelry can sell it through this site. The best part is, there are so many beautiful, interesting things to see and shop for. I haven't bought anything yet, but it's just because I am afraid once I start, I won't be able to stop. Oh, and did I mention in the clothing area you can sometimes find plus size stuff??? Autumn, I heart thee.

Now that October is upon us, this hippie is even happier than usual. Why, you ask? Because the time has come to bust out those pieces of my wardrobe that I couldn't use during the repugnant summer months.

While I detest bone-chillingly frigid weather, I adore the crisp, clean air of the fall and the ability to wear layers again. Aside from the color-changing of the foliage and the final (at last!) break from the humidity, autumn is my favorite time of year to get dressed. While summer requires a degree of minimalism, and winter requires about 10 pounds of gear just to prevent frostbite, autumn is that perfect, happy medium.

To add to my excitement for autumn ensembles, various street fashion blogs are just chock full of layer-clad beauties for inspiration.

After Thanksgiving

I have the post-Thanksgiving case of nerves I always get at this time every year. With Thanksgiving over, Christmas is breathing hard at my heels, and from now until Christmas Day actually comes, I feel as though I'll be playing catch-up. At least this year, I'm being a bit more disciplined about the situation. Of course, to make things even harder, we're usually out of the country every Christmas although it looks as though this year we may be in Washington - away from home, but not that long aching plane ride away from home.
I've been working mostly on custom orders lately and am finishing a wedding that will go out tomorrow. Lots of amethyst! Then, I have several other custom orders to get made (most for Christmas, so I'm doing okay there), but I've either sketched them out or know what I'm doing and where I'm going with them.
I've been working with different elements. The lampwork earrings above with lapis and carnelian (found in our Holiday Gift Ideas section match a fantastic bracelet on my Handcrafted Bracelets page.
The bracelet is made with freshwater pearls and Swarovski's newest crystals in a wonderful grey opal colour that I love. The silver freshwater pearls are perfect! The bracelet will be on our Swarovski Bracelets page.

The "W.E.I.O." Challenge

Well folks, expect to see a lot more photographic eye-candy and hopefully more interesting post matter in the near future because I've had an epiphany. While sitting in the bathtub the other day, an idea so grand that I was nearly inclined to look for a light bulb popping on above my noggin struck me. What is said idea, you ask? Allow me to elaborate:

I have a lot of clothes. As often as I go through my plethora of wearables and try to weed out some of the lesser worn articles, I still can't help but remark that I have managed to collect, for lack of a better word, quite a collection. Even worse, I still don't feel like I have enough. Sad, but true.

Worse than that even, is the fact that nine times out of ten, I take forever and a day to get ready to go anywhere. Why, you ask? Because I can't find a thing to wear. Much to my chagrin (and even more so to Dean's), on those days I usually end up putting on the same old tried and true t-shirt and jeans. Bor-ing. (Not to mention I always make a mess of the rejected outfits in the process.) So I have devised a plan to put an end to this endlessly annoying habit. Without further ado:

The "Wear Everything I Own" Challenge (W.E.I.O.)

Yes ladies and gents, I'm going to attempt to wear every article of clothing I own. (Not at the same time sillies.) Never again will I be able to say "Oh, I like that, but I've never worn it/rarely wear it."

Basically, the purpose of the challenge is to:

• force me to incorporate articles of clothing that I never/rarely wear into an outfit I like.
• help me to be a little more creative and bold with my ensembles.
• break me of my indecisiveness when getting dressed.
• motivate me to appreciate and utilize what I already have, instead of constantly wishing I had more.

The rules and guidelines of my challenge:

1. Make a list of all articles of clothing. This includes:
• every pair of pants.
• every top.
• every dress.
• every skirt.
• every pair of shoes.
• every piece of jewelery.
• all miscellaneous accessories (tights, leggings, scarves, hats, etc).

2. Each day, create a new outfit incorporating a new article of clothing, then check off said article of clothing on the list. Basic items, like tights, basic tees, and other accessories can be used more than once, but not excessively. The point of the challenge is to break away from the habit of wearing "favorites" all the time.

3. Most importantly, do not take more than one hour to get dressed and ready to walk out the door. And have a good attitude about it as well. The words "I look like crap" shall not escape my lips!

4. Take a picture of the daily ensemble to post.

Now, the company even has its own TV show now that follows around its paparazzi employees as they harass the stars. 3. US Weekly: A print magazine that can largely be described as eye candy, US Weekly’s website stays competitive with loads of celebrity gossip and photos. Using the same tactics as they do in the print edition, US Weekly’s website pulls people in with splashy headlines, little text and a focus on photos.


4. Perez Hilton: Perez Hilton (real name Mario Armando Lavandeira) began blogging about celebrities “because it sounded easy.” Now he’s a celebrity himself and boasts one of the most-read celebrity blogs out there. Perez has made both friends and enemies in Hollywood. His sharp tongue and critic’s nature has led some stars to befriend him to keep their name out of his negative commentary.

6. Starpulse: Starpulse is the “entertainment destination” for lots of gossip-hounds with 3.6 million monthly visitors. While the graphic design could use some help, the site is packed with headlines in every celebrity category imaginable.


7. Access Hollywood: This TV show has expanded its gossip empire onto the web and has a thorough and well-frequented site. All of the show’s hosts, including President Bush’s cousin Billy Bush, maintain their own blogs where they can wax poetic on their personal opinions of Hollywood.

42. Evil Beet: Evil Beet is a sarcastically funny blog that’s pretty tough on celebrities, but, pleasingly, their witty delivery makes it all seem fair. The blog also has some creative ideas for sub-categories. Click on the Celebs ‘N’ Drugs Galleries for star confessions about their narcotics habits.


43. Girls Talkin’ Smack: No shortage of smack talk here from these two blogging females. This site has a great layout – simple and easy to read.


44. City Rag: A New York City-based blog that slings insults with all the furor of a Valley Girl. But this blogger also sometimes posts on things outside the celebrity world, like art, meaning readers can find some culture to go along with their smut and maybe alleviate some of their guilt for wasting brain cells.

46. Bricks and Stones: If a blogger lives by the mantra that words can never hurt them, there’s no telling what verbal sparks will fly. But it’s not all drama on this blog. Recently, they posted four huge pics of Cameron Diaz trying on shoes in a department store. Not too exciting.


47. Hollywood Backwash: According to these spicy bloggers, “celebrity gossip is a dish best served cold.” Keep your timelines straight by linking to the related stories offered after each post.


48. Hollywood Offender: Another feisty site, another feisty tagline – “One bad deed deserves another” on this blog that doesn’t necessarily stand apart from the rest of Hollywood’s bloggers, but does offer thorough and well-written commentary.

Mollygood: No matter your status on the star totem pole, you’re fodder for this blog that’s “splaying celebrities from the A- to the D-list.” This blog is a breath of fresh air with it’s smart and witty reflections on all things star related. Posts are unique and the gossip goes well beyond the top stories of the day.


50. WWTDD: What Would Tyler Durden Do? is a blog (seemingly run by a guy named Tyler Durden) that makes fun of celebrities for fun. A lively blog with witty insight.


51. Hollywood Headache: Another solid, grumpy round-up of migraine-producing celebrity news on this blog.


52. CelebSlap: These bloggers pride themselves on getting out all the juice the celebs would rather not spill. A highly usable site, readers can even search for the news they want by typing it in. Read sections like, Fashion Police, Wannabees, and Xtreme Close-up, which fittingly features zoomed in detailed shots of all the stars.

General Interest

These sites don’t really subscribe to a specific slant. Well, sometimes they do, but in general they’re just interested in giving you the straight gossip and some detailed background information on the stars you love.

54. Celebrity Gossip: A site that compiles reports from fellow celebrity gossipers and is updated every five minutes. Readers can vote for their favorite stories and create their own Gossiper profiles. A highly interactive blog.


55. Hollyscoop: A busy blog that covers celebrities, their upcoming projects, and their fashions. Sub categories allow readers to easily find what they’re looking for and the site even employs reporters to record TV news segments posted right on the home page.


56. Hollywood Gossip: A general news blog heavy on the photos and the pop ups. But it does offer fun features like allowing readers to send in their own humorous captions for bad celebrity photos.


57. Celebrity Rumors: Sometimes nice, sometimes not, Celebrity Rumors does have all the latest news and an arsenal of accompanying photos for each story. This blogger loves it when stars say and do stupid things.


58. Celebitchy: Despite its moniker, Celebitchy is a pretty straight forward gossip site that presents information in a handy calendar format, so you know what happened when. Dig the Hot Posts sidebar on the left – it keeps readers up on the latest and greatest news. And there’s another impressive link section to other celebrity bloggers.


59. Celeb Guru: No spiritual advice on this site, but there is a nice, healthy round-up of the latest celebrity news. Don’t expect to find any off-the-beaten-path stories here, though. Headlines are mostly culled from the blockbuster stories of the day.


60. Gabby Babble: A steady stream of energetic blabber fills up this cute site. Easily a favorite, this site even ranks the best reader comments of the day and reports on gossip outside the celebrity world. And you can even join the Gabby Babble community and create your own profile!


61. Allie is Wired: Judging by the title and the amount of posts, this blog is run by a highly caffeinated individual (s). There are tons of links to be found on this blog. And if you’ve always been told you’re a dead ringer for Amy Winehouse you’re in luck! The blog even sponsors its own celeb lookalike contest.


62. Defamer: Defamer is a sassy well-rounded blog loved by all fellow celebrity bloggers. It’s hearty staff of seven contribute copy like it’s nobody’s business. Another site that allows users to register and create their own profiles.


63. Pink is the New Blog: This great little site is run by a man named Trent who claims “everybody’s business is [his] business,” and his popular blog might soon just be giving Perez Hilton a run for his money. A great, thorough site that’s also a terrific read.


64. The Bosh: A solid blog that posts headlines on everything to star-sightings at restaurants to stars that forget to wear underwear in public. Sometimes, though, the headlines could use some help. “Nicole Richie Out Running Errands” and “Ashlee Simpson Eats” don’t exactly compel further reading.


65. Popbytes: A good round up of what other bloggers are saying, Popbytes also breaks exclusives. Also, it has a creative tagline: “When culture pops, I wipe it up.”


66. FameTracker: Look up the fame record of any celebrity in history with this Almanac resource. More of an encyclopedia of celebrities than an actual news blog. Don’t expect to find pics of Ashlee Simpson eating here.


67. Celebrity Babylon: A photo-heavy site that has sections for shopping, music, and fashion. The top features each day are organized in a very attractive way, and there’s a section everyone will love from gossip hounds to audiophiles.


68. Flynet: Get loads of celeb photos on this blog run by two guys named Sam and Harry.


69. Just Jared: A really upbeat blog bringing you the straight news about the stars. Again, a site that’s heavy on stories about stars talking runs and getting coffee, but really, I suppose we can’t expect a scandal every day of the week.


70. Hollywood Grind: No secret is safe here on this standard news blog that keeps up with its competition, while not making too strong of a name for itself..


71. ICYDK: In Case You Didn’t Know keeps readers informed on side stories other bloggers miss, gives loads of links, and takes a fun approach to their URL. Teenage texters will catch on immediately to the acronym.

73. Hollyweird Gazette: All the “sleazy celebrity news you can’t resist.” Actually, this site is a bit outdated. Here’s hoping the bloggers come back soon. In the meantime, it’s a useful place to link out to more current blogs.

76. We Smirch: A collection of all the latest reports from news outfits and blogs all over the web, We Smirch calls itself an “automatic dirt digger.” The complex site is well organized and presents many forums for reader discussion on the latest and greatest breaking news.

Magazine and TV Shows

As People.com has proven, celebrity news organizations that primarily categorize themselves as a publication or television show have shifted to the Internet with a vengeance. Here’s a list of some web counterparts for our favorite beach reads and prime time pleasures.

78. OK! Magazine: A British tabloid that claims it’s “First for Celebrity News,” OK is known for its ability to garner rights to exclusive celebrity stories with its big payouts.


79. Hello! Magazine: Hello! is OK!’s biggest rival in Britain and abroad and boasts a decently navigable site. Like OK!, Hello! offers up the big bucks to stars willing to give out exclusive information and photo rights. Check out the photo galleries, horoscopes and latest star quizzes.

87. TunaFlix: A gossip site with a focus on the movie industry. A serious film site that latches onto the theory that sex sells with its provocative graphics.

What?!? You prefer to get your news from credible journalists out of a real newspaper? Well, suit yourself. Actually, some of the biggest most respected papers in the country have some pretty decent gossip columns, so go ahead and get your dirt with dignity.

92. New York Post: The Post’s Page Six is one of the most notorious newspaper gossip columns in history.


93. New York Times: Yep, even the nation’s journalistic stalwart gets in on the gossip from time to time.


94. Boston Globe: The Globe’s entertainment section is well-updated and the paper even has a spot for breaking news on its home page.


95. Boston Herald: Like the Post, this tabloid newspaper has its own gossip column called the Inside Track, as well as a pretty substantial entertainment section.


96. L.A. Times: Without a good gossip section, the L.A. Times would be put to shame. After all, Hollywood is its home turf.

The still is from a movie called 'Are These Our Children' which I couldn't find much info about, other than it was released in the pre-code movie days of 1931 - so something naughty must happen in this movie.

If it weren't for the fact that I really like this outfit and I'm jonesing to get going on the W.E.I.O. challenge, I wouldn't have even bothered to upload this pic. I waited too long to take it and had to do so indoors, hence the bad lighting.

I bought the sweater vest (or as Dean calls it, my "swest") a few months ago, but until yesterday it was too hot to wear it. It actually ended up being a tad too toasty indoors for the "swest," but I toughed it out. The weather is supposed to be cooling off quite soon, I couldn't be more thrilled. My fall wardrobe has been itching to come out of hiding. :]
